Adding and Subtracting across 10

We will build our mental calculation fluency by exploring different ways to add and subtract small numbers, including using doubles and near doubles, bonds to 10 and bridging through 10.

Numbers to 1000

We will develop a deep understanding of numbers within 1000. We will compose and decompose numbers under 1000, position them on different number lines, round and calculate with them. We will then apply our thinking to measures of length, mass and capacity.

Number Facts

Children's fluency with number is essential to their confidence and success in maths, and we are always working on it. We use daily Mastering Number sessions to support children in their year groups.

This half term Year 3 will focus on:

This half term Year 4 will focus on: unitising (seeing 'many as 1'), sorting and classifying factors and products, recapping doubles, and recapping x10 and x5

 

How to Help

You can support your child's maths learning at home by:

• Having 'Maths Eyes' - spot and discuss maths in real life and the world around us - this includes number, measure, shape, pattern, and more!
• Practise key maths facts to help improve recall (see below).
• Play maths games together, such as the ones here and here.

Practising Number Facts

Your child has a Numbots/Times Tables Rockstars account, which they can use to build fluency and confidence with key number facts. Please speak to us if you can't find this.

Additionally, children can practise away from a device using any of the following strategies:

• count in multiples forwards and backwards e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10... and 25,  20, 15, 10 ...
• quick recall questions e.g. 2 x 3 = ...., 18 ÷ 2 = ...
• Times Tables Bingo - Children write down six multiples from the times table they are focusing on. An adult then says questions from that times table. If the answer on the child's Bingo grid matches the question from the adult, they cross it off! Mrs Abbas is more than happy to explain this in more detail and give a demonstration!
