We work closely with the Nursery team to build on children's development so far and continue their learning journey to achieve their next milestones. At the bottom of this page you will find information about our daily routines in Reception. 

Our Reception goals

 We aim for your child to be able to:

  • Be confident to ask and answer questions and explore the classroom environment
  • Tell a story using taught vocabulary
  • Complete the daily mile
  • Write a message to a friend using phonic knowledge
  • Articulate their own feelings and be sensitive to others
  • Prepare and retell the sequence of preparing a healthy snack
  • Experience and identify all seasons and weathers using correct vocabulary
  • Decide on a play project, complete and evaluate it
  • Investigate patterns and be confident with numbers to 10

Physical Activity

If you are looking for more physical activity for your child, I would recommend:

for some simple PE challenges, focussed on personal bests. They include things like "how many times can you pass a ball around your tummy without dropping it in 60 seconds?" Some require equipment e.g. a beanbag and a hoop, if you don't have these at home, you could always improvise with a balled up sock and a skipping rope/belt laid out in a circle/ draw a circle in chalk.

The section at the very bottom of this page is full of stories and songs that the children might enjoy, some of which they will recognise from school (so far we've enjoyed the jolly phonics songs and the big number song together as a class.)

Useful Resources - including stories and songs
  • Have you seen the Kids' Zone? Play games and visit some cool websites.
  • Articulation of Phonemes This is for reference for parents, so that you can hear the way we teach phonics in school. It is a short video, displaying each letter sound as it is written, alongside someone saying the sound that is taught. These are some of the sounds we teach the children in Reception class.
  • Letter Names and Sounds Song This is a good song for letter names and letter sounds. The only thing I would change is the letter name for z. We teach the children that it is called 'zed'
  • Doubles Rap 1-10 A fun song, why not join in making the doubles on your fingers for the first half!
  • Comparing Height Practise ordering things according to their height on this website.
  • Numberline Number line for helping you to work out additions and take aways. First move the green start arrow onto your start number e.g. for 9 + 2 this would be 9. Then click on the numbers below the line to make your jumps and find the answer.
  • Simple Subtraction Ask your child: Is the number getting bigger or smaller? Can you show me the sign + or - Which way do you go on the number line when you takeaway/get smaller?
  • Addition Stories Ask your child: Is the number getting bigger or smaller? Can you show me the sign + or - Which way do you go on the number line when you add/get bigger?
